11 July 1944, 330 IR Tank Hunting Zones

The last overlay we have for the 11th of July is a record of German tanks (and one assault gun) destroyed by infantry.  Destroying 7 tanks in one day (and one the day before) would be quite a slaughter actually.  Obviously by the 12th of July the US infantry in the 330 IR had figured something out. It will be interesting to get to the reports on this day. Many of the tanks seem to be behind what was the operating lines defined in the previous overlays for the day.  It would seem to have been a major German counter attack on the 11th?  We’ll find out.

Here’s a second map identifying roads and trails that have been de-mined.  This one is more to the south-east of the first and is more specific to the 330 IR area.  Notice how much better the overlay fit onto the map.  Nice.

I was waiting to get o this one because it would test just how accurate my method for geo-referencing the overlays might be.  I’ve been going around and around with it all day basically. In the end some of he lines seem to be off, but others are right on; so I’m not sure how it could be corrected.  At one time I had 30 reference points and it wasn’t any better than with just 4.  I suppose I could eventually try referencing the specific road junctions since these are fairly easy to  identify; but I’ve never seen this actually do any better in the past, so it will take a lot of coaxing to get me to do the work.

Still, pretty darn good; and it could just be that the lines really were drawn off  the roads in the first place.  How concerned would they have had, or even how much time would they have had, to care about getting the roads traced exactly?

Where is mentions “black” on the map, here we have my usual blue.

Orient yourself on the campaign map finding Culot.

11 July 1944, 330 IR Bombing Plan

We have another rather curios overlay for 11 July.  I would have to assume it is for the morning; we’ll find out for sure, probably, once I start including information from the reports.  This is more or less in the same as the two first 11 July overlays so shouldn’t be too hard to get oriented.

We have 2 overlays for July 11th for the 330th’s struggle to clear the Germans from the bridgehead at le Port.  I’ve left out some of the coordinate markers so I could “zoom in” closer for the PNG.  Again, orient yourself on the campaign map using Saint Andre de Bohon and le Moulin.

I assume the 1700 overlay is where the 330th started

While the 2100 overlay marks how far they got. We’ll know more once I start incorporating the data from the various reports.
